Pattern Search

What To Do

Go on a Pattern Search when out on a walk or other outing. The goal is for you and your child to find as many patterns as you can -- on clothing, in nature, or elsewhere in your surroundings. You might notice patterned stripes on clothing, patterns on a butterfly’s wings, or patterns in the markings on the street or the windows on an apartment building. Your child may enjoy drawing some of the patterns he sees while you are are out or when you return, or you can photograph them with your phone if you have one.

What To Know

The natural and man-made environment are full of patterns, and it is important for children to see and talk about lots of different patterns, not just simple color patterns arranged in a line.
