Break Up Small Sets of Objects

Recommended Age: 4+ | Mathematical Topic: Early Arithmetic

Any set of 3 to 5 similar objects, like toys, forks, socks

What To Do

1 Ask your child how you could divide the set into two groups.
2 After your child has placed them into separate groups, ask them to count each group and then how many there are altogether.
3 Point out that you still have the same amount you started with.

Making Math a Process

Keep exploring- there’s not just one right answer! Ask your child, “what’s another way we could divide these up into two groups?” Help them see that one number can be broken up in different ways: 5 can be divided as 2 and 3, or 4 and 1, for example.
