Mentally Rotate Objects

Recommended Age: 5+ | Mathematical Topic: Spatial Skills

Letter Block (or any puzzle piece)

What To Do

1 Trace a letter block two ways: face-up and face-down.
2 Then place the letter block upside-down by your drawings.
3 Ask your child: Could you rotate the letter block to fit in one of these drawings? How? Does it fit in both? Why not?
4 Have your child describe how she would rotate the letter block to fit (or to see that it does not fit), then try it out.

What To Know

This activity helps children develop spatial skills. Spatial skills can be improved even in very young learners and are related to children’s future success in science and mathematics.
